Hanseatic Science Cloud prototype showcased

Apr 30, 2025

The Hanseatic Science Cloud (HSC) reached a major milestone this spring, with the launch of a recorded live demonstration showcasing the platform’s current features and its potential to transform cross-border life science research in Northern Europe.

Held on 13 March 2025, the HSC demo event was organized as part of the HALRIC project’s ongoing efforts to onboard pilot projects and expand awareness of the HSC platform. The video gives a first look at the live platform, illustrating how researchers can access, share, and analyse data seamlessly across institutional and national borders.

What is the Hanseatic Science Cloud (HSC)?

The HSC is a digital research platform designed to support collaboration between hospitals, universities’ research infrastructures, regions, and life science clusters across Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and Norway. It provides tools for data sharing, storage, analysis, and reproducibility — all within an intuitive cloud-based environment.

Developed within the framework of HALRIC, it is managed by Lund University (LUNARC, MAX IV), DESY, Rigshospitalet, University of Oslo (UiO) and University of Southern Denmark (SDU).

From plans to prototype

The demo followed key planning sessions earlier in the year, notably the HSC All-Hands Meeting held in Lund on 16-17 January 2025, where representatives from SDU, UiO, DESY, LUNARC, MAX IV, and LU came together to assess progress and fine-tune next steps.

During the meeting, the consortium reaffirmed one of its core objectives: to successfully onboard at least ten pilot projects. Efforts have since intensified to attract pilot project users through outreach events like the March demo, offering users the possibility to access HSC and to test the prototype, while also leaving feedback for future development.

While the technical team is constantly refining the platform and enhancing integrations, the HSC team is also developing recommendations for management to consider a long-term sustainable service.

What’s new and what’s next?

  • Pilot project access: The platform is now open to pilot users, offering early access to computing and collaboration tools.
  • Feedback mechanisms: A user survey has been launched within the platform to gather insights and inform future development.
  • User guide in progress: A comprehensive HSC User Guide is under development, aimed at supporting both current and future users.
  • Promotional momentum: HSC has been actively presented across multiple HALRIC working groups and steering committees to increase visibility and attract interest.

Be part of the HSC Community

The HSC isn’t just a tool — it’s a collaborative ecosystem. Researchers and institutions across the Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak (ÖKS)-Hamburg region are encouraged to explore pilot project opportunities and contribute feedback that will shape the prototype platform’s evolution.
