Next steps for the Hanseatic Science Cloud prototype

Jul 29, 2025

In May and June 2025, HALRIC’s Work Package 3 team pushed the Hanseatic Science Cloud (HSC) prototype into the spotlight.

Designed to connect researchers with powerful computing and data resources across the region, the HSC sparked discussions this summer on how the platform can support cutting-edge research and its potential to transform how scientists work together.

On 11-12 June 2025, the team showcased the prototype at the 8th Danish Bioimaging Scientific Symposium in Roskilde (picture). Shortly after, partners from Lund University, University of Oslo, LUNARC, DESY, and the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) gathered at SDU in Odense for an HSC All Hands meeting. The agenda covered lessons learned from the project so far, outreach strategies to engage testers, updates on technical development, and discussions on the technical, legal, and economic sustainability of the HSC.

With HALRIC now in its final phase, piloting the HSC is a priority. However, attracting suitable pilot projects has proven challenging. Many approved HALRIC projects either lack user access or do not plan to work at DESY, LUNARC, or MAX IV, which is essential for making full use of the HSC prototype.

To address this, the team is exploring a new outreach strategy aimed at securing meaningful user feedback. This includes engaging individual researchers outside the life sciences and beyond the current HALRIC network. The approach has been presented to the HALRIC Joint Steering Committee for further consideration. By broadening the search for pilot users, the WP3 team hopes to ensure the HSC collects broader feedback and needs from diverse research communities.
